Forog az idő (Time turns round) | The Project of MOME Media Design Department’s Creative Group about the József Attila Housing Estate

Media Design

The project of a creative group of students in the Media Design programme at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design is aimed at capturing the transformation taking place among the houses by involving local residents. The interactive 3D puzzle Forog az idő (Time turns round) is a glimpse into the past and present of the housing estate and a vision of a possible future. After sunset, players can encounter the mixed prints of the three timelines, and then while exploring the detail they can create order among the different images.

The construction of the Attila József housing estate started in the 1950s. The panel buildings built under the 15-year flat development programme was aimed at addressing the housing needs of new workforce coming to the city or of families living under poor conditions. The prefabricated buildings replaced the emergency houses of Mária Valéria housing colony between Üllői út and Epreserdő utca.

The public places built at that time, such as the Pest-Buda Cinema, Nagyjátszó (The Big Playground), the largest ‘ABC’ supermarket in the country at the time, or the Ezüst Sirály (Silver Seagull) catering complex, which, with its show palm garden, functioned as a confectionery, a music and dance espresso, a beer bar and a restaurant with gypsy music, became the dominant places in the lives of residents. Today we only know all this from anecdotes. The housing estate changed a lot over the past decades: the colours of the houses, the character of the parks and the streets and the sets on the playground are completely different.

Venue: József Attila housing estate, Madáretető (Bird Feeder) Park, next to Nagyjátszó (Big Playground)

Opening ceremony: 21 April 2020, 20:00

The installation can also be viewed during the day, but the interactive game is on after dark, from 20:00 to 21:00 every day, except for Sundays.

All ages are welcome!
